UC MULTICAMPUS RESEARCH GROUPS IN THE HUMANITIES

Deadline: March 1, 2010

[Back to UCHRI program overview]

Applications from prospective UC Faculty are accepted exclusively online via UCHRI's FASTAPPS system.

The University of California Humanities Network, through the UC Humanities Research Institute, announces a Call for Proposals for UC Multicampus Research Groups (MRGs) in the Humanities. Funding for MRGs was included in the recent successful proposal of the UC Humanities Network as a component of the UC Consortium of Humanities Centers. The Consortium will oversee the competition and make final funding decisions.

MRG funds will support long-term collaborative research at any stage of development. Grants will range from $5,000 to $15,000. Between five and ten proposals will be funded. The grant period will be for fifteen months between April 1, 2010 and June 30, 2011. RA and GSI costs should be limited to within 35% of the total budget; larger allocations to that category require special justification that directly and demonstrably contributes to completing the work proposed in ways not otherwise possible. Proposals for conferences are discouraged. (Note that conferences and seminars, as well as other seed grants, are available through UCHRI.) Consultation with local Humanities Center directors in the preparation of grant proposals is encouraged.

Substantially reformulated and reworked proposals previously submitted for funding in the MRPI competition will be considered. Groups may re-apply for funding beyond the first grant period but are expected to demonstrate accomplishments, assess work done, describe what remains to be accomplished, and explain what has been successful and what has not. (Those applying in 2010-2011 for renewed funding will have to submit a progress report along with the application.) Examples of possible outcomes may include publication, performance, plans for future collaboration and curricular innovation, and the like. Examples of budget categories include travel, editorial assistance, electronic meetings, student retreats, group consultation of archives or site visits, graduate student workshops, and support for collaborative authoring or composition.

The application will include: 750 word narrative discussing overall intellectual enterprise and how the proposal contributes to it; home campus contribution (amount or type); statement of possible outcomes and impact; list of participants; and specific and accurate budget.

Key dates:
March 1: Proposals due
April 1: Funding decisions
June 30, 2011: Report due

Questions should be directed to local humanities center directors or Dante Noto at UCHRI (dnoto@hri.uci.edu).
