George Lewis Wins American Book Award
for
A Power Stronger Than Itself

The University of California Humanities Research Institute offers warm congratulations to Board of Governors member George Lewis, Case Professor of American Music at Columbia University, whose 2008 monograph A Power Stronger Than Itself: The AACM and American Experimental Music (Univ. of Chicago Press, 2008) has won a 2009 American Book Award from the Before Columbus Foundation. The AACM is a Chicago-based group of composers and musicians and activists formed in 1965 and dedicated to performing and recording experimental music. The winners of the book awards were formally announced and recognized on Sunday, October 11, at the Nuyorican Poets' Café in New York City.
