UCHRI Director And Associate Director Meet With NEH Chairman Institute Director David Theo Goldberg and Associate Director Dante Noto were among a small group of guests invited to meet with Jim Leach, chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities, during his first visit to the west in his new role. The meeting was held at the Japanese American National Museum in downtown Los Angeles on September 18, 2009 and was arranged by the California Council for the Humanities. The agenda was designed to introduce Chairman Leach to a range of work being done in California and to discuss challenges and opportunities facing the humanities in California. Leach represented Iowa for 30 years in the House of Representatives, founded and served as co-chairman of the Congressional Humanities Caucus and was also chairman of the House Committee on Banking and Financial Services. He has served as NEH chairman for one month since his nomination in June by President Obama. Other guests represented public and private universities, civic and cultural organizations, non-profit groups and grantees of the California Council. Chairman Leach described some potential thematic areas of interest for the Endowment while suggesting that current programmatic structures would likely remain in place. UCHRI looks forward to collaborating with the other invitees and hosting Chairman Leach on a future trip to California. |
